Urdu 1 Picture's ‘Actor in Law’ is a Box Office Success

October 14th 2016, (Pakistan) – One of the bests Television Channels, Urdu 1 ventured into the Film Distributions for the first time by introducing their association with Nabeel Qureshi's movie Actor In Law, with the cast of Mehwish Hayat, Fahad Mustafa, Aly Khan, and Indian actor Om Puri in lead roles.

The producer Fizza Ali Meerza is so delighted with the success of Acor In Law.
"Urdu1 did a fabolous job to distribute the film both locally and internationally. This time around we took Urdu 1 on board a lot earlier because of eagerness they showed towards the film. So Urdu 1’s role with us was to distribute this film locally and internationally and because it is their first film I am sure it will have better international release than any other Pakistani film released so far,” she said.

Urdu1 channel started its operations in Pakistan in 2012 and has played a major role in shaping the local industry by offering internationally fame programs. The public welcomed the diversity of said content, turning it into a household channel.

The channel's popular drama series include Ishq-e-Mumnu, Izabel, Feriha, Fatima Gul, Aashiyan Meri Mohabat ka, and Kala Paisa Pyar.

The channel representative, GM Programming Nina Kashif also spoke about this new venture.

“Our channel has played a significant role in introducing new trends on television with successful plays like Ishq-e-Mumnu and Feriha at our credit. Now, it is the time to add another feather in our success cap so we have decided to venture into film distribution also. There couldn’t be better way than to become partners with one of the finest filmmakers our industry – Fizza Ali Meerza and Nabeel Qureshi,” she said.

Box office: ‘Actor in Law’ leading, ‘Janaan’ and ‘Maalik’ catching up

The Nabeel Qureshi directorial has so far raked in Rs110 million. PHOTO: FILE

KARACHI: The three Pakistani releases that came out on Eidul Azha – namely Actor in Law, Janaan and Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay – may have received mixed to mostly positive reviews but their box office figures indicate they are all going steady.

By the end of their opening week, all three films retained their original spots with Actor in Law still leading the race, having collected over Rs110 million. Exhibitors seem to agree that the Nabeel Qureshi directorial has been pulling in great footfall all week. Urdu 1 Marketing Manager Sajjad Haider said, “Actor in Law is doing great business because it has great content and visuals rivaling any Indian film. In some cases, it is better than that even!”

Janaan’s collections could not be confirmed but it did rake in about Rs39.2 million over the three-day Eid holidays. The film’s total worldwide collection so far has been Rs130 million while the final figures from the local box office are expected to be in by Friday.

As far as Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay is concerned, total figures have not yet been put together for it either. However, what is evident is that the Anjum Shahzad directorial is still in third place. Exhibitors stated the film has done relatively less business, as compared to the other two films.
Additionally, Ashir Azeem’s Maalik is performing well too, despite a minimum number of shows available to it. Perhaps all the controversy it found itself in has worked out for the best, drawing in crowds who want to see what the buzz was about. Atrium Cinemas Managing Director Nadeem Mandviwalla claimed Maalik has been performing really well. “We have given it only one show in the afternoon but still, it’s getting about 50% to 60% occupancy,” he said.

Exhibitors also confirmed that attendance in theatres dropped Monday onwards, as is the norm. Nonetheless, Mandviwalla reiterated that Actor in Law had an average occupancy of 95% to 97%, Janaan with 89% to 92% and Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay with 85%. “The shows were all sold out over the weekend. The attendance slightly dropped yesterday but regardless, the films are doing great business.”

Commenting on what footfall will be like during the rest of this week, Mandviwalla added, “Until now, it was the holiday season. But now comes a crucial time to see which film manages to stay on top.” Super Cinemas General Manager Khorem Gultasab echoed his sentiments and said, “This week is going to reveal how much these films are actually worth.”

Gultasab added that Janaan has gradually been catching up. “The weekend saw both Janaan and Actor in Law having almost 100% occupancy,” he shared. “Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay was at about 80% already so Monday brought a significant drop in business for it, while the other two films experienced only a slight drop.”

According to Cinepax Cinemas Marketing Manager Mohsin Yaseen, overall attendance dropped about 50% on Monday. “But that is normal after long holidays. The coming weekend will be almost similar, in terms of shows allocated to the films,” he said. “The only change is that three new films are coming this weekend, Banjo, Sully and Magnificent Seven, and they will be allocated minimum shows. I think all three Pakistani films are going to retain their spots this week as well.”

As far as the lifetime business expectations go, Actor in Law producer Fizza Ali Meerza said she would not quote a figure. “I don’t think in terms of numbers. I am glad that people are coming to watch the film and liking it,” she said. “We have had tough competition from local movies and even Bollywood, and have stood in the face of it. It’s great to see that our film is doing particularly well.”

Box office report of Eid releases 2016 (Which one earned the most?)

This Eidul Azha has been a grand one for Pakistan Film Industry as after many years three major Urdu films supported by famous media houses are released. These films are Janaan, Actor In Law and Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai. Out of these Janaan and Actor in Law are also released overseas in various countries.
Here are un-official box office collections for all the three films on Eid first day.

Janaan (جانان)

Janaan (جانان) is considered as the biggest film coming on Eid being distributed by ARY Films in Pakistan and B4U films outside Pakistan. Apart from Pakistan the film is also released in almost 15 countries of Europe (UK), North America (USA , Canada), Africa (South Africa, Mauritius), Middle East (UAE, Omann, Qatar), Asia-Pacific (Singapore, Fiji, Australia).
Outside Pakistan Janaan was released on 8th or 9th September 2016, in Pakistan it is released on 13th September 2016.
In Pakistan on first day of Eid the film has collected 1.04 crore PKR which is a strong figure for any film on Pakistani box office.
Outside Pakistan apart from UK there has been no reports of any worthwhile business. In UK the film has performed really well as it was expected. Bin Roye a film of similar genre performed exceedingly well in UK last year which raises the expectation for better business of Janaan here.
In UK the film was released on Friday 9th September 2016. In five day of business it has gathered 146k Pounds Sterling which is nearly 2.03 crore in Pakistan rupees. The film had a dull opening over the weekend but gathered momentum on Eid Day 12th September 2016 (In UK Eid was on 12th September).
Here is the day wise breakdown for Janaan in UK
Friday.. 14k
Saturday.. 20k
Sunday.. 15k
Monday (Eid Day).. 56k
Tuesday.. 40.8k
Total.. 146k
Apart from UK no box office collection figure has been published for any other country.

Actor in Law

A film of comedy genre always appeal to audience in Pakistan. Actor In Law a social comedy has out performed all the rest of films in Pakistan on first day of Eid. Actor in Law is distributed by Urdu 1 Films. The film is also released in Middle East UAE on 8th September 2016 but so far no box office collection figure has been received from UAE.
In Pakistan Actor in Law is released on 13th September 2016. The film has earned a massive 1.65 crore PKR on its first day in Pakistan. It is the best opening day record for a Pakistani film in 2016 leaving behind Ho Mann Jahan. It is also the second best figure for opening day for any Pakistani film after Jawani Phirr Nahin Aani.

Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai

Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai is the third film released on Eid by Geo Films. Full of emotions and based on the relationship of a young couple this film has also performed well. It is only released in Pakistan.
The film has earned nearly 75 lakh on its opening day which is a more than decent figure for any film in Pakistan.
So going by these figures the film leading the race in Pakistan is Actor In Law and overseas it is Janaan.
Two major multiplexes of our country Cinepax Fortress (Lahore) and Centaurus Cineplex (Islamabad) were closed on the first day of Eid and are opening from the second day of Eid i.e. 14th September 2016 so the collections of all three films are expected to increase on the second day of Eid.

Box Office Update: ‘Actor In Law’ leads the race while ‘Janaan’ and ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay’ score big too!

This is Eid-ul-Azha was rather filmy as we had not one or two but three big budget local films hitting cinemas and fighting for the viewers attention. Among them were the Fahad Mustafa- Mehwish Hayat starrer ‘Actor In Law’, the Feroze Khan- Sajal Aly starrer ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay’ and lastly the Armeena Khan-Bilal Ashraf-Ali Rehman starrer ‘Janaan’. All three films were well promoted so the box office was bound to take good start and that is exactly what has happened.
-Leading the race is ‘Actor In Law’ which has raked in 1.65 crore being the second highest Pakistani opener , secondary only to the blockbuster ‘Jawani Phir Nahi Ani’ which opened with 2.07 crore. But it’s worth mentioning that AIL was clashing with two other films while JPNA was a solo release. So kudos to the Nabeel Qureshi directorial for these amazing  numbers.

-‘Janaan’ has opened up with 1.04 crore which is also a strong opening as only two film this year, Ho Mann Jahaan and Bachana, have managed a 1 crore opening day.
-As for ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay’ the  official numbers are not out yet but an educated guess would be that the film has made somewhere around 0.75 crore considering the number of shows and the average occupancies.

So the total tally of the three films is about 3.4+ crore which shows how much our cinema has grown in the last year. Interestingly the number will grow on day 2 as growth is expected at the box office.Lets see how the films score on day 2! Stay tuned to Galaxy Lollywood for all updates.

Actor In Law 1.6 crore
Janaan  1.04 crore
Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay 0.40 crore

Box Office Update (Second Weekend): AIL rises, Janaan holds, ZKHH falls

This Eid-ul-Azha was rather filmy as we had not one or two but three big budget local films hitting cinemas and fighting for the viewers attention. Among them, the Fahad Mustafa- Mehwish Hayat starer ‘Actor In Law (AIL)’, the Feroze Khan- Sajal Aly starrer ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay (ZKHH)’ and lastly the Armeena Khan-Bilal Ashraf-Ali Rehman starrer ‘Janaan’.

Update: Day 1-3

All three films received good promotions and in result the box office was bound to take good start and that is exactly what happened as we saw good box office numbers for day 1.
While day 2 was the day of surge with ZKHH doubling its numbers, day 3 has been more about sustaining the position as ZKHH makes the same business it did on second day, Janaan shows an increase of mere two lac from what it had raked in on Day 2.
AIL, however, has noticed some dip with a difference of approximately 40 lac in its second and third day business. The stability or even the dip maybe supported by the fact that Thursday was a working day with Eid holidays limited only to two days this time around. The film is still maintaining its top position and its third day business is still bigger than what it made on its opening.

Update: Day 4-6

While the Eid festivities were over the weekend meant that the three films would transition from one set of holidays to the other and the box office numbers would be smooth. All three films did well considering where they had started and keeping in mind the release of two Bollywood releases it would not be wrong to say that our local films have registered strong six day extended weekend numbers.

Update: Day 7-10

The crucial part as always is when Monday comes and the box office takes a dip.  Moreover due to the Bollywood releases ‘Pink’ and ‘Raaz Reboot’ and the resurgence of Pakistani film ‘Maalik’ it meant that the shows would be further divided.  ‘Actor In Law’ and ‘Janaan’ held particularly well due to the positive word of mouth and it seems the films are going to have a long smooth run at the box office. As for ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay’,  considering the film never opened big it was expected it would either grow with time or maintain its steady numbers but unfortunately the film has slowed down.
Now with another Friday and more releases (‘Banjo’, ‘Sully’ and ‘Magnificent Seven’) our local films have more battles to fight! Who wins only time will tell. For the time being here are the day to day numbers.

Update: Day 11-13

Weekends are breathers for films and the second one for the three Eid-ul-Adha releases proved to be not much different. Actor In Law had biggest of the party where compared to its pre-weekend four day figures of 2.8 crores, it made 3.05 crores (approximately) in three days of the film’s second weekend.
On the other hand, where Janaan has brought in almost the same figures as that of the four days before weekend; consolidating its overall position, Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai has maintained its trend of fall with earning earning only a figure 0.60 crores in its second weekend.
It is expected that while AIL may still see two more weekends before it closes its telly, and Janaan a week or so more, the same cannot be said for ZKHH with certainty as there are already new players in town like Banjo, Sully and Magnificent Seven.
